Op-Ed: It's Time to End Daily Op-Eds

Op-Ed: It's Time to End Daily Op-Eds

In the final years of ethical journalism, a debate is raging on campus in regard to the rights of privileged white students’ ability to publish any thought, no matter the intent, in the Daily without consequences.

Many of the proponents of Op-Eds I’ve spoken to often speak of it as an enlightened method that allows the children of well-meaning millionaires who colonized the U.S. to give their input.

This argument is simply wrong. Rich white students vomiting their thoughts into an Op-Ed isn’t enlightened — it is malfeasance. But thousands of individuals every year will continue taking advantage of the Daily until we actually come to our senses and change it.

This practice of opinion writing is unlikely what the drafters of the 1st Amendment sought out to achieve, nor is it likely what the Founding Fathers would have wanted.

It’s time to end Daily Op-Eds once and for all. They are over-abused, misinterpreted and further some of the most illogical, racist arguments in our otherwise only sometimes-kinda-problematic paper. Other colleges have realized these simple facts. It’s about time we do the same.
