Transparency FTW! Ski Trip Doesn’t Even Pretend to be Accessible!

From Mayfest and A&O, to even the College Republicans, many organizations at Northwestern try to exude diversity and accessibility. But some clubs bravely do things a little differently. Every year, Northwestern’s Ski Trip Exec Board organizes a weeklong love-making bender in Colorado for hundreds of Northwestern students.

Sherman Ave sat down with Blake William Jared, the NU Ski Trip freshman rep.

“Our vibe is like, please totally come!” said Jared. “But if you can’t make it for financial reasons, that sucks! We will totally miss you on the slopes!”

Since students have to buy a ticket before the financial aid application comes out, Jared offered to “venmo you a couple bucks” if you get the early bird tickets. They briefly considered posting a graphic about how to get off your ass and get a job to pay for ski trip, but honestly? They don’t care.

While other clubs on campus try to prioritize different types of diversity by recruiting members of varying SES, gender identity and race, Jared reports that NU Ski Trip’s recruiting strategy is “just seeing who fucks with us.”

Looking around at his board of nine similarly snow-colored peers, he remarks on how much they’ve grown as an organization since starting college: “It’s just such a coincidence that we all  went through the same school system that fed us to Northwestern. Well, except for James, who’s from Greenwich and not Scarsdale. But we know so much more now about how to casually downplay our exorbitant wealth to make people trust us.”

We applaud NU Ski Trip for not trying to be something they’re not. Why pretend to be financially inclusive if you haven’t acknowledged a poor person since announcing the Dance Marathon beneficiary? It’s pretty refreshing, actually.
