EVANSTON — The Northwestern University Student Organizations and Activities office announced a plan Sunday which aims to make student groups more inclusive for anyone who has been admitted to a university with a 10.7% acceptance rate. Over the next year, the university plans not to recognize new student organizations that share its same standard of exclusivity. Alice Kirch, director of the Student Organizations and Activities office, hopes the new action will make it easier for the few hand selected Northwestern students to be part of student groups. “We’ve been met with a lot of people who feel they’ve been rejected from the Northwestern experience” said Kirch. “We want to make sure only 89.3% of our applicants have that feeling.”

While the details of the plan are unclear, the administration guarantees it’s considering possible negative ramifications of the plan. Kirch continued that “[the administration] is absolutely aware how this might affect groups which would be forced to accept some of the most elite students from across the country.”

“This is really about making Northwestern inclusive,” said Kirch. “We want to make sure the 1,925 members of the Class of 2020 don’t have any problem finding their place at Northwestern.”
