EVANSTON, Il - Mayfest announced today that American rock band Smash Mouth would be participating in the 2015 Battle of the Bands, the yearly event where student bands compete for a performance on Dillo Day.

The band, famous for their 2001 hit “All Star,” is trying for the chance to perform on the Dillo Day main stage on May 30th for the first time since their 2013 performance.

According to Steve Harwell, the band’s frontman, Smash Mouth has been eager to get back to Dillo Day. “We’ve been struggling with [Mayfest], trying to get them to let us perform again. We realized the solution was right in front of us the entire time.”

Mayfest representatives report that they “have repeatedly expressed disinterest in Smash Mouth returning as a Dillo Day performer” but cannot “officially” bar the band from competing in the Battle of the Bands.

Harwell says Smash Mouth is “sure we’ll be given the chance to perform again.” The lead singer added “I don’t care if [Mayfest] doesn’t want us—it’s like I’ve always said, 'I fed to the rules and I hit the ground running.'”

The Battle of the Bands is today at 27 Live from 9–11 PM.
