Progressive Fraternity Marginalizes all Social Identities Equally
Evanston Il--Amid charges of sexual assault, classism, and racism, students are starting to take a critical stance at greek life, one fraternity stands out among the others for trying to break down the systems of oppression coded in its history. Theta Beta Kappa is fighting for the equal treatment of all identities by marginalizing all identities equally.
“We really try our best to make sure that each social group is equally excluded,” said the fraternity’s president Mike Lynn “we’ve had a history of discrimination, which we’re trying to distance ourselves from, so we’ve decided to stop the inequality by treating all marginalized groups equally.”
The fraternity, established in 1855, has had a long history of racial discrimination and sexual assault, but in 2011 Theta Beta Kappa decided to re-evaluate its mission statement to include “the equal treatment of all marginalized people”.
“Like last week we were going to have have a whites only party,” said Theta Beta Kappa secretary Eric Frineder “but we realized that that would include women, members of the LBGTQ community, people with non binary gender identities, and people of different economic backgrounds, so we changed it to a straight rich white male only party.”
Theta Beta Kappa is truly a progressive model for other fraternities to follow.
“Yeah the party kinda sucked it was just a bunch of white dudes in the house, but you know, social change is never an easy thing.”
